The column was constructed between 1840 and 1843, and it was designed by William Railton, an architect. The actual construction work was carried out by the architect's assistant, John Edward Carew, an Irish sculptor. The funding for the construction of Nelson's Column was raised through public donations. The total cost amounted to £47,000, which was a substantial sum at that time. Various individuals and institutions contributed to the project, including the British government, the King of Netherlands, and private citizens.

The column features intricate reliefs at its base, which were sculpted by William F. Woodington. These reliefs depict Nelson's major victories, including the Battle of Cape St Vincent, the Battle of the Nile, and the Battle of Copenhagen. The Corinthian column itself is made of granite, sourced from the quarries of Dartmoor in Devon, England.

Furthermore, Nelson's Column holds great historical and cultural significance. It serves as a prominent symbol of British naval prowess and commemorates Admiral Nelson's leadership and sacrifice during the Napoleonic Wars. Trafalgar Square is one of the most famous public spaces in London and serves as a hub for cultural events, celebrations, and protests. The column and its statue have become iconic landmarks of the city and attract millions of visitors each year.
