According to the US Constitution, there are some criteria for a person to become President:
  1. Be at least 35 years old
  2. Be a US citizen born in the USA
As many people may know, the President is not elected by direct vote, but by an Electoral College, which many people argue that it is not a democratic way of electing a president, but that is another story for another time.

Apart from being the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces, the President can appoint federal judges, and he can also propose laws, but these have to be introduced by a Congressman or a Senator in the Congress, or he can veto laws passed by the Congress. Furthermore, having executive powers, he needs to ensure that the laws are carried out. Regarding the foreign policy, the President has the power to sign treaties and appoint ambassadors.
